Sterilising: The Worries of Parenthood

by

Oh, the worries you can go through as a newly fledged parent. It is only now that I have 2 little ones, and another on the way, that I can look back and have a little giggle at the endless things that used to play on my mind. It’s only natural. After all we’re supposed to be over protective, our motherly instincts kick in to ensure that we allow no harm or risk to come to our precious offspring.

I would often lay awake worrying about all sorts of things like… should I have left her socks on? I didn’t want her feet to get cold in the night. Will our visitors have clean hands? I don’t want anyone to pick her up and pass on any germs. Has she been crying for too long? Has she been quiet for too long? Am I doing any of this right?

Those who know me well know that I’m a natural born worrier anyway. To add to the equation, this new precious cargo, not to mention the mounting pressure from the deluge of parenting advice that seems to constantly circulate around us and all of a sudden, the stakes feel so much higher.

First time around, with baby no.1, we used the MAM Microwave Steam Steriliser. We used it as a cold-water solution steriliser to start with. It’s how I remembered my Mum and Dad doing it for my younger brother and sister. It meant I could pop a couple of MAM Anti-Colic bottles in the night before and make them up as I needed, the next morning. As simple as it is to use, I would still worry that I had done it all wrong. As I carefully assembled the bottle I would find myself touching the teat to pull it into the collar. Arhhh! Did I need to re-sterilise it? I can remember the real sense of panic that would wave over me every time. Have I contaminated her bottle?

I soon discovered the beauty and efficiency of self-sterilising my MAM bottles. Just 3 minutes in the microwave and they were done. And the odd holiday or weekend trip away was hassle free – all we needed was a microwave. It’s the little things like this, the things that make our lives just that little bit simpler, that as a parent I really appreciate.

This time around, things will be different, as I will have my hands full with two young toddlers at the same time. However, I have vowed to relax a bit more, trust my instincts and let the experts at MAM do all the hard work for me. I’m so excited to try their new 6 in 1 Electric Steriliser and Express Bottle Warmer. Aside from looking great in the kitchen it also doubles up as an express bottle warmer and baby food warmer. Which means no more standing bottles in a jug of boiling water and trying to gauge when it has reached optimum temperature. Everything shuts off automatically once the program has finished which will give me a few precious hands-free minutes to run around after the other two.
